“GOOD THINGS ARE HAPPENING IN WACO”

There are some encouraging signs in our community! While the poverty rate is still unreasonably high, there are numerous initiatives that seem to be converging and addressing the systemic challenges Waco has struggle with to address. Non-profits are working together; the Waco City Council is addressing recent research showing our gaps; Prosper Waco has created a collective impact structure to measure and promote changes that need to occur; and the overall economy and employment has increased new opportunities for our residents.

Mission Waco has been blessed to be a part of these developing issues for over twenty-three years. As a faith-based “holistic” ministry, we see Christian community development as a critical piece of the healing and growth of our city, especially impacting the poor. Job training, substance abuse recovery, shelter and social services for the homeless, a donation clinic for the uninsured, an attorney to help those who have limited funds, a performing and visual arts program; and children and youth programs that tutor and engage lower-income children and teens toward educational success are all part of our work.

But “mobilizing” the middle-class to become involved is equally important! If our city is to overcome the embedded poverty, volunteers must be a part of the journey. Churches, businesses, schools and individuals are being educated through hands-on compassion. Our weekend Poverty Simulation attracts around 900 participants each year. The Other Side of Waco Tours help local residents get an upfront view of the needs and agencies that are addressing the issues. Volunteer projects, such as the Friday Morning Breakfast, the Walk for the Homeless, school supplies and new toys for the under-resourced families, devotionals at My Brother’s Keeper homeless shelter and an annual training conference are dispelling the myths of poverty that can become a barrier for some. Relationships built through volunteer experiences are important.

The optimism that many of us who serve our city are experiencing must continue if we are to succeed. The stories of hope and change are everywhere, but many Wacoans have not heard those accounts. The year ahead offers another chance for all of us who love our community and its people to forge ahead to build a prosperous city for all of us, like the prophet Jeremiah predicted would come when we get involved, “seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you to
