Pest Free Project Frees Expectant Mother From Roach Infestation

After living her entire life in homes “raining with roaches,” a first-time mother and McLennan County resident will now be able to raise her baby in a pest-free home, thanks to help from the Pest Free Project.

The Pest Free Project is a nonprofit initiative created by 855bugs.com. The project provides free pest removal services to those in need and has helped many people, from veterans and those in hospice care, to single parents.

Nurse Gabbie Worley, from the Nurse Partnership at Baylor Scott and White Hillcrest, noticed the infestation during one of her weekly home visits to care for the first-time mother. The young soon-to-be mother, aware of the roach problem, expressed concern to Worley about wanting to raise her baby in a safe environment.

Nurse Worley and Daryl Meyer, program director for the Nurse-Family Partnership at Baylor Scott and White Hillcrest immediately thought to themselves, “What can we do to make a difference.”  Founded in 2012, the Pest Free Project aims to provide basic pest control education, prevention and treatment to community members in need for one year. Licensed pest control professionals perform all the treatments at no cost. The Pest Free Project is a wonderful.

“The young woman was very gracious and very thankful to have someone do this for her,” Worley said. Worley and Meyer said they are happy the Pest Free Project was able to help the young girl in their program and create a better health environment for her baby.
